Chief Detective 1958 is an crime thriller drama set in the late 1950s. It serves as a prequel to the classic Korean series “Chief Inspector,” which aired from 1971 to 1989. Unlike in the original, the protagonist Park Young-han (Lee Je-hoon) is depicted as younger, less experienced detective who passionately apprehend criminals with the help of three charismatic colleagues.

The series stars Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, Choi Woo-sung, Yoon Hyun-soo, and Seo Eun-soo. It served as the series directorial debut of movie director Kim Sung-hoon, who helmed the 2017 action film “Confidential Assignment.”

Prior to this work, lead actor Lee Je-hoon starred in Taxi Driver 2.

Interestingly, Choi Bool-am, the actor who played the titular character in the original series, made a special appearance in the premiere episode.

Chief Detective 1958 airs every Friday and Saturday at 21:50 KST on MBC, taking the time slot previously held by Wonderful World.

Characters

Lee Je-hoon as Park Young-han, a passionate detective at Jongnam Police Station who boasts the highest arrest rate when it comes to petty thieves.

Lee Dong-hwi as Kim Sang-soon, known as the “crazy dog” among his colleagues, is a prominent detective within Jongnam Police Station.

Choi Woo-sung as Jo Kyung-hwan, a young man who goes from working at a rice mill to joining the police force at Jongnam.

Yoon Hyun-soo as Seo Ho-jung, who decides to apply for a special police recruitment program after graduating from a prestigious university.

Seo Eun-soo as Lee Hye-joo, the beautiful and knowledgeable owner of the bookstore called Jongnam Seorim.

Reason to Watch

It’s not every day that you come across a detective story set in late 1950s Korea, so that’s a unique draw in itself. The biggest attraction for many might be star Lee Je-hoon, renowned for his badass character in Taxi Driver S1-S2. If you’re a fan of his action sequences and enjoy seeing his chemistry with potential quirky partners, then Chief Detective 1958 is definitely worth your time.
