“Arthdal Chronicles” has been confirmed again to return with a second season more than two years after its broadcast.

Studio Dragon, the production company behind the drama, officially announced on February 21 that “Arthdal Chronicles Season 2” is aiming to start filming this year.

The first season of the fantasy series aired on cable channel tvN from June to September 2019. In February of 2020, tvN said that a second season was being prepared and aiming to film in the second half of that year. However, the drama did not make it to the 2021 lineup of the network, with the COVID-19 pandemic cited as one of the reasons for the production delay.

Screenwriters Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon of the first season will return to write the sequel while a different director, Kim Kwang-sik, will lead the production. Kim directed the 2018 film “The Great Battle” starring Jo In-sung and Nam Joo-hyuk (“Twenty-Five, Twenty-One”).

Meanwhile, Studio Dragon stated on Feb 21 that the cast and broadcast schedule have not been confirmed yet, making it unclear whether or not the main cast of the film will be able to reprise their roles in “Arthdal Chronicles Season 2.”

Starring Song Joong-ki, Jang Dong-gun, Kim Ji-won, and Kim Ok-bin, the first season was regarded as the first Korean ancient fantasy drama, with some viewers even describing it as the Korean “Game of Thrones.” It follows the story of mythical heroes as they struggle for power and protect their tribes in the land of Arth.

The drama takes place during the Bronze Age and is loosely based on the story of Dangun, who is considered to be the founder of the first Korean kingdom of Gojoseon (2333 B.C.-108 B.C.).

Having filmed in Brunei and featuring in-demand actors, “Arthdal Chronicles” had an estimated budget of 3 billion won ($2.53 million) per episode. It became one of the most anticipated Korean dramas of 2019 partly because it marked Song Joong-ki’s return to the small screen after starring in the mega hit series “Descendants of the Sun” (2016) opposite actress and ex-wife Song Hye-kyo.

Expectation for the series was also high because of season 1 director Kim Won-suk, who previously helmed three Baeksang award-winning shows namely “My Mister” (2018), “Signal” (2016), and “Misaeng: Incomplete Life” (2014).
